About Rabbi Yehuda
Rabbi Yehuda loved people and always sought to bring them the gift of insight achieved by carefully reading the text.
Torah Scholar, Teacher, and Teacher of Teachers
Rabbi Yehuda, a revered teacher and a collector of students, was known for his clarity of instruction and depth of inquiry. Although his classes included detailed textual analysis and spanned many aspects of Rabbinic studies, he ensured they were accessible to his diverse audience. His mastery of the complex enabled him to simplify concepts for novice learners while inspiring teachers to find multiple ways to convey these lessons to their students. He taught high school, college, and graduate students privately at home, and after tefillah in shul. He was a regular lecturer at annual conventions such as the שבוע עברי organized by the הסתדרות עברית. Earlier in his career, he taught the nation on Kol Israel radio where he gave radio lectures on פרשת השבוע and משנה.
His Teacher, the Hazon Ish
Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, (known as the Hazon Ish החזון איש) was a halachic authority and teacher. Karelitz spent 20 years in Bnei Brak, holding no official or political position, yet became a respected leader for the Haredi community. He had no children but developed a close connection with the young Zvi (whom he called Zv'aryeh). In this image, Zvi is seated in the corner, next to Rav Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler who is next to the Hazon Ish. The Hazon Ish had a significant influence, yet Zvi never identified as a Haredi. He dedicated his life to learning and performing mitzvot. For more see: The Hazon Ish letters to Zvi Yehuda: Teacher, Student, and Legacy and the display at the National Archives of Israel.
